About the Briefing
The combined UK total of abortions since the passing of the Abortion Act 1967 has reached approximately 11 million. Few legal gains have been made in the last 59 years, and the number of abortions has increased year on year, to the point where the latest figures demonstrate an 11% increase, bringing the number of abortions up to 299,614 per year.
The Heartbeat Bill Campaign seeks to introduce a law to protect all babies in the womb from the moment of detectable heartbeat (around 6 weeks from last menstrual period), in non-extreme cases. The bill will allow for abortion in cases of rape, to save the life of the mother and when the baby has a fatal foetal diagnosis. The reason for the inclusion of these exceptions is to cut through the commonly touted reasons for opposing a ban on abortion and obtain substantial support across the board to allow us to reach that first goal in the campaign of 100,000 signatures (which will trigger a debate in the House of Commons), in favour of drafting this bill and to start turning the tide of abortion in this nation.
Additional legislative aims include:
- Banning abortion on grounds of non-fatal disability (e.g., Down’s syndrome, cleft lip and palate, club foot, all of which are regularly cited as reasons for abortion).
- Requiring in-clinic ultrasound scans before an abortion is acquired.
- Making the recording of NHS numbers mandatory for all abortion decisions, to track longitudinal data.
This campaign aims to catalyse a national conversation, driving a dramatic shift in public opinion. This could save as many as 120,000 lives a year by focusing on the humanity of babies and creating a practical purpose to unite Christians and non-Christians. The success of this independent campaign is heavily dependent on evangelical support. We need prayer and we need signatures.
